Manuela Sambo
Born in 1964 in Angola, Manuela Sambo relocated to the former German Democratic Republic in 1984, when her interest in visual art was piqued and an awareness of her African origins emerged. Her formalist paintings, generally portraying female figures with abstracted faces, take inspiration from her personal background, aspects of Neo-expressionism and recently in old european culture history.
In the multipanel series 4 Women, Sambo creates iconic female half-nudes in saturated pigments and penciled embellishments, static save for mysterious differences in hand position; Ngingangi uses the same techniques to express a fearful dynamism. Sambo lives and works in Berlin. |
