Relief Plaque - Oba with Four Attendants: |
The figure in the middle is an Oba in the company of his entourage, two members of which hold shields over him for protection. The Oba carries a staff and wears a richly-decorated apron, coral cap, coral collar and cuffs on both his wrists and ankles.
The scene depicted is probably a specific annual ritual performed during a palace ceremony. Plaques like this one once hung on Benin's palace walls or on pillars in its entrance area.
